This Jackson Park location marks the start and finish of the first automobile race in America. On Thanksgiving Day, 1895, six cars, four gasoline and two electric, raced fifty-four miles to Evanston and back. J. Frank Duryea won the race in seven hours, fifty-three minutes driving a gasoline powered vehicle. This race introduced the automobile to America.
The Rock is no longer there and the site is fenced in for the construction of the future museum being built. Hopefully there will be a place for The Rock and it’s history at the museum.
For those who would like to meet up and go on a drive, we will meet at Elly’s Pancake House at 7:30am for breakfast and leave to The Rock at about 8:30am. It's about a 1/2- hour drive. We will circle the old site, stop at the South lot the Museum of Science and Industry and then head north to the Tower Road Park. From there we will head west on Tower Rd. to the Skokie Lagoons.
